Fertility and its Consequence on Family Labour Supply

چکیده
Fertility and its Consequence on Family Labour Supply While a large body of literature focuses on how fertility affects female labour market participation, there are relatively few studies that examine the effect of fertility on male labour market participation. Even if the burden of child care falls mainly on women, an exogenous increase in fertility is likely to change the optimal allocation of time, therefore, the labour supply decision of both female and male in a household. This paper analyses how an exogenous increase in fertility affects labour market participation of men and women in Indonesia – a country that has seen dramatic changes in the labour market over recent decades. The finding is that women reduce their working hours in response to the higher fecundity in both rural and urban areas in Indonesia. On the other hand, the higher fecundity leads to men’s increasing their working hours only in rural areas. The higher degree of specialization in response to fertility in rural areas is driven mainly by the differences in the cost of childcare rather than the characteristics of occupation or household bargaining power. Adieu Rabenmutter – The effect of culture on fertility, female labour supply, the gender wage gap and childcare
This paper studies the effect of cultural attitudes on childcare provision, fertility, female labour force participation and the gender wage gap. Cross-country data show that fertility, female labour force participation and childcare are positively correlated with each other, while the wage gap seems to be negatively correlated with these variables. The paper presents a model with endogenous fe...

Lower fertility has several benefits at the individual level: fewer births are associated with better health and schooling outcomes for women and their children, with higher household income and wealth, and with improved labour market opportunities for women. Indonesia established a national family planning programme in 1969 and total fertility has declined rapidly since but there is little con...
متن کاملDeclining fertility and economic well-being: do education and health ride to the rescue?
It is widely argued that declining fertility slows the pace of economic growth in industrialized countries through its negative effect on labor supply. There are, however, theoretical arguments suggesting that the effect of falling fertility on effective labor supply can be offset by associated behavioral changes. We formalize these arguments by setting forth a dynamic consumer optimization mod...
متن کاملFertility and Female Labour Supply
The estimated relationship between the number of children and female labour supply is often negative; however, it is not clear whether this arises because of a causal effect of children on labour supply, or whether it is the result of heterogeneous preferences (women who have a preference for home-based activities have more children and a lower preference for market work). The fact that parents...
متن کاملFertility in Developing Countries
The associations between fertility and outcomes in the family and society have been treated as causal, but this is inaccurate if fertility is a choice coordinated by families with other life-cycle decisions, including labour supply of mothers and children, child human capital, and savings. Estimating how exogenous changes in fertility that are uncorrelated with preferences or constraints affect...
